Proposed Backcountry Fee At Great Smoky Mountains National Park Would Be A ...
"Do you have a reservation?"
This issue for some time has been requested by users of the backcountry in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but in the future you may have to return money to be able to respond affirmatively.
While the park has long held the hinterland during the night to have a driver's free, and reservations are required for all shelters and several wilderness campsites, it has not charged for such permits or backpackers reserves.
This may change in a proposal currently open for public comment. And if a charge for stays of overnight hike is taken, it would create the first zone along the 2180-mile National Trail Scenic Appalachians, where thru-hikers who have to cross about 72 miles of the park would have to pay set for the night.
Although most of the legions of this year's thru-hikers are currently somewhere in the woods on the AT and probably unaware of the proposal, those responsible for the preservation of Appalachian Trail are looking at it and plan to meet soon with park officials to discuss its ramifications.
The desire to start charging the backcountry in Great Smoky stems in part from a lack of park staff, which led to the Backcountry Information Center in the park is open only three hours a day, and therefore the line phone is often busy or unattended, park officials note.
Melissa Cobern, a specialist in asset management backcountry, said last week that part of the intention is to make it easier, thanks to a system of online booking, for backpackers to reserve a spot in the park. With an online system, she said, the Rangers are currently a few on hand to manage reservations backcountry would have more time to help backpackers who have more questions about the park and its hinterland.
In addition, a reservation system allowing the park to better manage the use of shelters, said Ranger Cobern.
"Many times people will go to the backcountry sites, particularly those that are not reservation, and they are much crowded," she said.In these situations, backpackers often simply pitch a tent nearby instead of going on the trail in search of a shelter with room, resulting in resource damage, the ranger said.
