[An American in Avcılar] The electric bill
I was reading through my journal today and ran across a story that happened right after my shipment finally arrived at my flat. For my first year in Turkey, I rented a flat in what I thought was Taksim. After a month or so, I realized that while I might in fact be in Beyoğlu, I was residing in an area of the belediye called Tarlabaşı. A bit different from the Taksim tourists see.The following account tells of another of those frustrations that yabancılar often encounter as they learn how to live in İstanbul. The account I wrote follows:
I am so frustrated that I may run amok at any moment. Turkey may well defeat me. I thought I was flexible and adaptable and a good problem solver. I thought my patience and persistence would avail me. I thought that surely no society could be completely irrational and inefficient (in terms described by the German sociologist Max Weber) and still exist on a day-to-day basis. I may well be wrong.
Today seemed simple. I had received my electric bill and although it seemed very high I was ready to pay it. I took some dollars -- I am now down to only a little money left for the month -- and started for the money changer. I stopped by Cağdaş Börek to get a börek. I have been eating simple and wanted some little change. Then to the money changer. My Yahoo device gave a higher exchange rate for the dollar than that quoted at the döviz. OK, so everybody has to make a buck. I exchanged $300 and headed for the bank. My bill was for TL 142.50 and I also wanted some cash to pay the tailor and get some cigarettes and take me through the remainder of the week.
Turks on the whole hate a queue almost as much as they hate an open window. The window, they are sure, will cause them to catch a cold and die. Queuing, I guess, is a threat to manhood and the glorious Central Asian nomadic past they imagine. I, on the other hand, descend from yeoman farmers and peddlers. Not much glory there, but what the heck, so standing in line does not distress me.

At first I thought it might be highly stylized Greek --although the church did not look Orthodox -- but I could detect none of the Greek alphabet. OK, I thought next, maybe Arabic script. I looked for a letter I could recognize but to no avail.
