Students soak up ideas for contest to make water safe
All incoming high school seniors have stress. But Rishi Chauhan, Kyle Graham and the rest of the InvenTeam at Eastern Regional High School have set their sights on solving a more permanent problem.
These 15 intellectually gifted Voorhees students share a common goal: to solve the global problem of water contamination and make water safe, specifically in the town of Gulu, in northern Uganda.
The team is designing a cap fit for a 55-gallon drum, a universal-size container available worldwide. The cap would be made up of several filters, making the water in the drum usable for drinking along with other household purposes.
The project's versatility will allow for it to be used anywhere, but Gulu holds a special importance to the Eastern students. The town's UNIFAT (Upper Nile Institute for Appropriate Technology) school is a sister school to Eastern, and the implications of the invention for those students is tremendous, says InvenTeam adviser Donna Donato.
"It's so great that we have a real-world application for the purification system we hope to invent," the Mount Laurel resident said.
According to Chauhan, the Voorhees senior who assembled the team, the cost of final prototypes is estimated somewhere between $3,000 and $4,000. After that -- when the caps are made to be sent to Uganda -- they are expected to cost about $300 to $400 per unit, including drum.
Cost is the driving force behind the team's determination to win the InvenTeam Initiative, a competition sponsored by the Lemelson-MIT Program. The competition allows for 10 teams of high school students and their mentors to receive grants of up to $10,000 to invest in a global improvement solution.
More than 300 schools across America apply for the competition, and Eastern's team recently became one of about 20 nationwide to receive an Excite Award, making them national finalists for one of the grants. Previous winning inventions have included a robotic coconut tree climbing device and a tactile graphing calculator for the blind.
